Radical Hospitality with Lava Maeˣ:
We co-created Pop-Up Care Villages to break down dehumanizing barriers of perception and possibility that constantly assault individuals experiencing homelessness and steward beloved community in a space of healing, comfort, and resourcing.
We partnered with unhoused individuals as co-designers of events that could support meeting numerous essential life functions as a one-stop resourcing space in an environment that felt safe, comfortable, and nourishing.
We located the event where many unhoused individuals were already: on the steps of San Francisco’s largest public library, proximal to the Tenderloin’s existing service organizations and shelters. We also helped transform a space long associated with struggle into one of connectedness and opportunity.
We dismantled the dichotomy of beneficiary/volunteer: the unhoused were the event’s guests and were matched 1:1 with radical hospitality ambassadors who supported them in navigating and fully resourcing themselves in the event space.
The events featured: Lava Mae’s mobile shower trailers, haircuts + shaves by Fellow Barber, live music, healthy gourmet food + coffee, medical/dental/vision care, veteran’s services, social services resources, clothing/shoes/etc free store, deep listening, and much more through the generosity of over 30 Bay Area businesses and nonprofits.
Contributions provided: program co-creation, project co-management, operations support (planning, logistics, contract management, space holding), partnership cultivation, participatory design facilitation, visioning + scale support, storytelling (photography + communications), impact analysis, resource cultivation (financial + in-kind donations)
